Why can't ternary lithium batteries be charged in a sub-zero low-temperature environment?

Published on 2025-03-24 by zhushican

The low-temperature performance of lithium batteries of different materials is also different. The hottest lithium iron phosphate now has the worst low-temperature performance. Our product's release capacity at -10℃ is 89% of the maximum capacity, which should be relatively high in the industry; the release capacity at 55℃ can reach 95%, and the attenuation of relatively low temperatures is relatively small. This is still a product for inspection. As you understand, the quality is much higher than that of normal assembly line products.

Relatively speaking, the low-temperature performance of lithium manganate, lithium cobalt oxide and ternary products is better, but it is also limited; the sacrifice is high-temperature performance. Now the industry has high safety performance and good high temperature performance. In fact, the battery activity is not as high as the above three types, and it is relatively safer. The overall performance is still not as good as that of manganese lithium or ternary.

Everyone feels that lithium batteries cannot be charged in winter. Some of them have battery management systems because of product protection, and some of them cannot be charged in due to quality problems. Lithium batteries must be used in winter shorter than in summer. I would like to remind everyone that it is best not to charge lithium batteries in winter. Due to low temperature, lithium ions nested on the negative electrode will produce ion crystals and directly pierce the diaphragm. Generally, it will cause a micro-short circuit, affecting life and performance, and may explode in serious cases!

The mobile phone is too low to charge:

In fact, this phenomenon is normal. When the temperature is too high or too low, the mobile phone will run slowly, which will cause the device to automatically shut down. In addition to iPhones, smartphones such as HTC and Samsung will also be unable to turn on after automatically when the temperature is too low. Users can just bring their phones to an environment with normal temperatures and can turn on the phone again.

This is a protective setting

Apple brand technicians said that Apple equipment has temperature protection settings inside, and the normal use range is generally 0~35℃. Too low or too high will warn or even automatically shut down the power off. It is recommended not to charge the ambient temperature when it is too low or the phone is hot, otherwise it will affect the battery life.

Charging at low temperatures may lead to irreversible damage

Expert: There are two reasons why lithium batteries cannot charge at low temperatures. One is that the low temperature causes the battery itself to deteriorate its performance and affect charging. The other is that the equipment is protected from charging.

The occurrence of these phenomena in the experiment shows two points: First, when the battery performance of these devices has not changed too seriously at 0~1℃; second, the protection measures for iPad and other devices are relatively complete.

Low temperature protection means that when the temperature is too low, the metal lithium in the battery will be deposition and no longer reacts chemically with the substance, resulting in a short circuit inside the battery.

Low temperature protection is a 'self-protection' mechanism of lithium batteries

Generally speaking, the low temperature protection of mobile phone lithium-ion batteries is around 0℃, and the low temperature protection of laptops is around 5℃. This is due to the different chemical reaction substances in the two batteries. "The battery capacity of a laptop is much larger than that of a mobile phone. The larger the battery capacity, the more dangerous it is, it is easier to charge forcibly in low-temperature environments, so the safety factor is higher
